Artist Statement:
My art is a physical response to the music I listen to and how that makes me feel. I enjoy listening to deep house music, trance, techno, and other electronic sub-genres. Although the speed or intensity of this music is not always directly linked to how chaotic or busy my paintings turn out to be, I often find a good balance between colour, shape and line through the way I’m feeling and the music I listen to.
Sometimes my most calm and simple pieces are produced while listening to intense jungle or drum and bass. I've tried to find an explanation for this, my body absorbs the music and channels and processes it in a way that give me more focus and once it reaches my hands, allows for more control. Resulting in what I like to call ‘Formed Abstract’ paintings, my work is inspired by Gerhard Richter, who I studied in great depth while at school.
When I paint my goal is to create a harmonic combination of bright and bold colours and lose grid-like lines and patterns, mixed in with curves and more natural shapes. The paintings are therefore rhythmic and 'musical' rather than narrative or pictorial.
