Jo Matei

“Italy is the country where I first discovered my passion for the arts. There I learned the basics of drawing and painting. Being easily in contact with the works of the Renaissance Maestri helped me understand the harmony of human body and the depths of perspective and composition. In these early years I also developed a profound interest for portrait paintings.

During my first and only art class in 2016, I had the amazing opportunity to meet and be guided by a talented art teacher who unveiled the secrets of oil painting to me. Ever since I could not let go of the brush and canvas, becoming my main means of creation. The year 2016 has been important to me also for the fact that I took part in my first collective art exhibition.

Although the sunny Bel paese laid the foundations of my artistic craft, my creative moods are mostly influenced by the more obscure aspects of human existence.

The aim of my art is to depict, explore and challenge themes that are still considered taboo in our society today, with a central focus on the spheres of sexuality, religion, death and the hidden fears of the unconscious.

Sources of inspiration: Zdzisław Beksiński, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Vincent Van Gogh, Francisco de Goya, K. D. Friedrich, Tim Burton, H. P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Carl Jung, Marie Louise von Franz, fetishism, dreams and death.”
