The Winter Open Studios Art Show in November was a truly auspicious occasion in the life of Wimbledon Art Studios as it saw the official opening of a 55 brand new, purpose built artist studio extension on the existing Red Studio building. This has raised the total number of studios to 220 and firmly cements Wimbledon Art Studios status as the largest single site art studio complex in Europe and therefore one of it’s most creative hubs.
The show was a huge success and attracted 4000 visitors during the 4 day event. A new approach to our marketing of the show resulted in a high percentage of first time visitors of which a fair number had travelled some considerable distances, including some overseas journeys. It was great meeting new faces and hope they will soon become regular old friends.
We always have a prominent figure to officially open the show. Stephen Hammond MP & Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Communities and local Government not only kindly opened the show but also officially opened the new studio extension. In the past we have had Pelé Cox, Poet in Residence at the Royal Academy of Arts, William Packer, artist and former art critic to the Financial Times, and Razia Iqbal, Arts Correspondent for the BBC. We will keep you updated as to who it will be for our May 2012 show
Considering the current economic climate and funding cuts in the Arts sector it was wonderful to see that such an enthusiastic response translated into sales. There was many an interestingly wrapped shape cradled under an arm, accompanied by a smiling face as people departed after a couple of happily lost hours exploring.
