Paul Emmerson

Studio: 240

The vogue of modern wall papers, in the 1950's, ousted plain distempered colours and textile designers could produce colourful creations without fear of rejection.

There task became more difficult when they had to start thinking of designs that would hang comfortably against backgrounds that already contained pattern.

My work using, today, unfashionable materials such as Fablon and Veniila on gesso painted board with gouache is an attempt to combine these unbalanced designs in to one more balanced and symbiotic design.
