Nancy Cogswell is a Canadian artist living and working in London. Her work bears traces of her architectural training in its preoccupation with space. She uses quotidian objects to make images that are saturated with nothingness, unhindered by representation or narrative. The tonal structure of the paintings has an emotional content with a momentum of its own, regardless of subject matter. An economy of means in both process and content finely tunes the tension between physical surface and pictorial space. Cogswell’s paintings, built up in a series of subtle layers, re-imagine objects as spaces and explore the ambiguities between representation and abstraction.
