Elena García de la Fuente

Studio: 259

Elena is currently working on a series exploring people looking at art, which is inspired by the different exhibitions, art fairs and Biennale’s she goes to. She likes to observe the relationship between the viewer and the artwork as well as the different situations that occur between them, like for instance, when a work of art is so popular that you can’t even see the work, in contrast with another that is completely ignored by the visitors. The titles are an important part of the work, they help the artist imagine stories, conversations or monologues, and are intended to encourage the viewer to look beyond what they see. Elena is interested in creating a parallel between art and life, as well as connecting past and present.

Elena’s works are in the private collection of Gavin Turk (UK), Jim Chanos (USA) and Font-Irwin Collection (UK), as well as in other private collections in Azerbaijan, Argentina, Georgia, Spain and Switzerland. She has exhibited in numerous exhibitions in London, Leeds, Berlin, Salzburg and Spain.

Elena García de la Fuente was born in Madrid (1975) and raised in Málaga. She has lived and worked in London since 1999. She studied Fine Art at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, before finishing her studies at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1997. She completed an MA in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute in London in 2001. In 2005 she won a Funding Award from the Prince’s Trust and was awarded 3rd place in the Art Interview 3rd Quarterly International Online Artist Competition. As part of the prize she was invited to exhibit in a group show in Berlin.
